Particulars of Organization, Functions & Duties

Uma Charan Patnaik Engineering School, Berhampur, previously known as Berhampur Engineering School, named after the great freedom fighter and eminent parliamentarian Late Uma Charan Patnaik, was established in the year 1956. It is located in the Silk-city, at a distance of five Kms from the Railway Station and five Kms from the Bus-stand. The Industries Department, Government of Odisha, took over this institution for better management from private committee on 12th November 1958. This institution is affiliated to the State Council for Technical Education and Vocation Training (SCTE&VT) Odisha, Bhubaneswar and is under the administrative control of Director of Technical Education, Odisha, Cuttack which comes under the Industries Department, Government of Odisha.

The institution has a sprawling 49.785 acres area in Kalapuri Mouza in Khata No.16 & 27 in the name of Industries Department. The institution is running in a single campus having two large buildings. The old two storied building houses administrative block along with the departments of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, drawing halls, class rooms, Edusat hall, Communication Skill Laboratory & Computer Centres. The new three storied building constructed under World Bank Assisted Project accommodates the departments of Computer Science Engineering, Information Technology, Chemical Engineering, Bio Technology & Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering, LRUC hall & Gymnasium etc.

The institution has a separate workshop building which houses Fitting Shop, Machine Shop, Turner section, Welding shop, Carpentry shop & Smithy Shop.

 INFRASTRUCTURAL FACILITIES

L.R.U.C. Hall

     The institution has a well furnished; Air conditioned Learning Resource & Users Centre (L.R.U.C) with a sitting capacity of 150 persons. This hall is used to conduct seminars, workshops, short term training Programmes, EDP meetings etc. All sorts of latest audio visual aids like T.V, LCD Projector, Over Head Projector, Computer etc. This hall is also utilized to generate revenue on hiring basis under I.R.G. scheme.

Central Library

     The institution has a well sophisticated central library with a collection of 34,054 books for use of staff and students. These include books on Science, Technology.

     Engineering & General interest. Students get facilities to read books, magazines, technical journals in the study space provided in the library.

EDUSAT Hall:

     A big hall is used to accommodate EDUSAT programme. The Satellite Interacting Terminal (SIT) was installed on 4.10.2007 with an objective to provide support to education through low cost ground segments and to reach the un-reached in every nook & corner of our country. An amount of Rs.3,78,955/- has been spent out of Development Fund to make this EDUSAT hall well furnished with sophisticated furniture, 03 nos. of A.C. & other Audio Visual Aids. This hall has the capacity to accommodate 60 nos of participants.

Communication Skill & Personality Development Laboratory:

     A magnificent C.S.P.D Lab has been developed recently by Centre for Advanced Communication, I.I.T, and Kharagpur in a hall of size 696 sqft. in the first floor of the Institution Building with a project cost of Rs.6.79 lakhs to enhance the vocabulary and communication skill of the students.

Computer Centres:

     There are four computer centers which are well furnished with A.Cs & Latest model computer systems. Many licensed version of software are available for quality teaching in CAD/CAM, Auto CAD, Computer Hardware net working, Visual Basic, C++ etc. The BSNL Broad-Band Internet connection is available to all the computer centers & to all the Departments for use of staff and students.

Tata Knowledge Centre:

     The centre, functioning in a hall of area 30' x 25' and situated in the premises of this institute, was established on 4th November, 1996, being financed by TATA Steel Project, Gopalpur and Jamshedpur. This Centre posses 2,490 number of technical books belonging to Electronics & Telecommunication, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Computer Science branches. Books on Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are also available in the centre.

     The Centre remains open from 7.30 AM to 11.30 AM on each working day. There is a study room in the centre which can accommodate 40 to 50 students. Books, Journals are issued to the students of their choice for reference in the study room.

Guest House:

     A beautiful Guest House, well-maintained & fully equipped with all types of modern amenities like Air-conditioning facility is available in front of the Institution and situated in the Staff colony.

Gent's Hostel:

    Two number of Gent's hostel, which are about fifty years old, do exist in the closed vicinity of the Institution Building ; out of which one(Hostel-1) has been declared unsafe by the P.W.D Authorities as per Letter memo No. 1004   dtd. 08.11.2007. The toilet part of the Hostel-2 is being renovated by the P.W.D with an estimated amount of Rs 15/-lakhs and the renovation work is expected to be completed shortly. However the D.T.ET, Odisha, Cuttack has given an administrative approval  of  Rs 1,91,08,000/- for construction of 108 seated new Gent's Hostel of area 19667 sft i.e.  6791 sft. (Ground Floor), 6663 sft (1st Floor) and 6223 sft (2nd Floor) of which the soil exploration under quality control has already been started since February, 2009

Lady's Hostel:

    The Self-financing Ladies' Hostel named as "ALAKANANDA LADIES' HOSTEL" is being run in two residential flats after necessary renovation with a capacity of 120 students. It is situated in the staff-colony with a separate boundary wall.

Lawn-tennis Court

    An eye-catching, well-maintained & spacious Lawn tennis court is available in the quadrangle of the Institution Building.  The staff and students of this institution, and sometimes other distinguished players make use of this court.

    The AICTE, New Delhi in its letter No. 760-82-015(E)/ET/95(2/22)1783 dated 08.07.2008 has accorded the approval for the following courses/ branches.

N.B. In addition to the above intake, the ITI passed out students are admitted in the 3rd Semester through lateral entry DET examination, conducted every year.
