The Model Degree College, Nabarangpur was set up in the year 2016 by the Government of Odisha with the objective of offering higher education to the populace of tribal dominated Nabarangpur district. Previously there were no Government colleges in the district and students had to migrate either to adjoining Koraput District or Kalahandi District in search of Government institutes to pursue further education upon completion of their intermediate studies. Spread across an area of 10 acres the college presents a panoramic view of countryside farther from the hustle and bustle of Nabarangpur town with greenery and farmland in its surroundings. Set amidst educational entities such as Government Polytechnic, Nabarangpur, Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya, Hirli, the Model Degree College, Nabarangpur has been constantly facilitating higher education ever since its inception. Consequent upon establishment of Vikram Dev University at Jeypore in the neighbouring Koraput District in 2022, the college is now affiliated to Vikram Dev University and currently offers UG programmes in 14 disciplines, catering to the academic needs of more than 1100 students of Nabarangpur and other far-off districts. It has accommodation facilities for male students in the form of a 60-seater hostel and the girls hostel bearing capacity of 40-seater is likely to become functional from the coming academic session, i.e., 2024-25. The college also boasts of a well-equipped library with provision for automation of the facility in future. To promote extracurricular activities and passion for sports, the college playground serves as an ideal place for students-both boys and girls.
The institute has been consistently producing rank holders in different disciplines at the university level over the years. Students have made their mark not only in academics, but also in extracurricular events and activities held elsewhere, bringing laurels to this citadel of higher education in Nabarangpur district. The college has received adequate attention, support and patronage from the district administration and people representatives from time to time. Although the completion of a decade since the establishment of the college is still 2 years away, yet it has made significant strides in improving people’s lives socially and intellectually in this hinterland of Odisha.
