Introduction

  MANUAL-1

Particulars of Organization, Functions and Duties

[Section-4(1) (b) (i)]

1. Brief History of the Public Authority:

Kamala Nehru Women's College is one of the premier Institution of the State of Odisha has completed three decades in 2009-10. At present it has 2000 students and 112 staff members  including teaching and non teaching. The College is a Government grant-in-aid college and affiliated to Utkal University. The College has permanent affiliation and has been listed under 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act and also NAAC accredited .The founder of the College with the able guidance of Late Dhiren Patnaik, a renowned Social worker started its mission imparting higher education to women of the state of Odisha.

Situated in the heart of Capital City of Odisha had its modest inception with a strength of only 196 students, at 'Bhubaneswar Women's College in the year 1979 in the premises of Buxi Jagabandhu People's Association on hire basis", lnspite of odds and constraints, the college grew manifold in a very short span of time. The increasing number of students could not be accommodated in the small building. So, the college was shifted to the present building in Unit-I allotted by the State Government in the 1980. In the year 1986, the college was renamed as 'Kamala Nehru Women's College'. The institution is proud to be named after such a personality and always tries to follow the foot step of that great lady.

We are also very much grateful to our Ex. Chief Minister of Odisha Late Biju Patnaik for his love, affection and greatness, who has donated nearly 3 acres of landed property with building in the year 1991 where at present the college is functioning.

Having been started with noble purpose of providing opportunities for higher education to women, the college caters to the need of teaching only in Arts stream. On its onward march, by realizing the importance of Science, Information Technology, Commerce and banking of human activities, the institution started the facility for providing Science education and Commerce education both at Higher Secondary and Degree level. When we look back from here, the very perception of opening avenue has perfectly come true, as it is evident from the fact that some of our students have pursuing higher studies in Engineering, Medical, Biotechnology, Microbiology, MBS etc.

Our academic output shall speak adequate for itself, some of them have topped in Utkal University. The students are not only achieving academic excellence but also excel in sports and other activities.

2. Objectives:

i) To provide access to higher education and achieving academic excellence among the women in the state.
ii) To explore the innate powers of the women to make them empowered and to utilize it for the socio-economic development both of the self and society.
iii) To make the young women socially responsible and service oriented at the need hour.

iv)
To equip the young women to keep abreast of knowledge explosion/ information exploration.
v) To study, preserve and enrich the socio cultural tradition of Odisha.
vi)
To develop the skills among the young women to serve for the down trodden of the society.

3. Mission/ Vision:

Our aim is to build the "Powers of the 'Human Mind & Spirit' to create conditions in which aptitude and love and knowledge guide the students and formulate characters to prepare them to live a harmonious and meaningful life which will lay the foundation of a greater tomorrow". Further "the institution is committed to the cause of empowerment of women, through access to education, particularly higher education, in order to encourage her to assert her independence and womanhood and to utilize it for the socio-economic development both of the self and the society".

4. Motto "Tasmoso Mam Jyotirgamaya":

Out of Centrary's darkness and ignorance we move towards the radiance of knowledge.

The emblem comprises of the open book and a woman is holding the lamp with flames, which resembles the lotus. The open book communicates the message that the education shall be made available to all those who were deprived of it so far. The flames in the hand of women conveys that woman is the ''Shakti' and Power'. She will lead the society from Darkness to light, from ignorance to knowledge and from the unknown to known, It indicates that women are the torch bearers of the society. It is through education the institution shall attempt to achieve its objectives.

The  'motto' of the institution suits well the 'emblem' and both together underline the high and noble principles with which the institution shall attempt to work in the field of women education. As such, these together frame the philosophy and guiding forces as to how the institution shall progress and prosper.

Needless to say that, we are far from being established as an ideal institution. We know our short comings and limitation. Nevertheless, these is a tremendous potential for further improvement and expansion. The college has reached its present level due to dedicated team work of the teaching and administrative staff, constant support and encouragement from the management and above all the financial support of the parents, Government and UGC. The family members of Kamala Nehru Women's College are-committed to strive hard to reach still greater heights of excellence in higher, education, thus there by fulfill the aspirations and expectations of the people of the region, who have contributed greatly in the process.
