ACTIVITIES OF THE DIRECTORATE OF HORTICULTURE:

     The Directorate of Horticulture carries out an array of activities to promote horticultural crops like fruits, vegetable, spices & flowers mostly under National Horticulture Mission and under State Plan schemes in the non-mission districts. Besides, Cotton Development Board (CDB) sponsored programmes for Coconut Development, ISOPOM (Oil palm) and Micro Irrigation are implemented in the State. The physical and financial achievement during 2007-08 and programme for 2008-09 under schemes are given below.

National Horticulture Mission (NHM):

     National Horticulture Mission is a Centrally Sponsored Plan scheme launched during 2005-06 in the state. Now 24 districts of the State namely Cuttack, Puri, Nayagarh, Khurda, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati, Keonjhar, Kalahandi, Koraput, Nawarangpur, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Nuapada, Bolangir, Sonepur, Phulbani, Ganjam, Dhenkanal, Sundergarh, Sambalpur, Angul, Bargarh & Deogarh have been identified in 4 clusters for development of 9 major horticultural crops under National Horticulture Mission. Govt. of India gives 85% grant as central share & 15% is borne by State Govt. The crops selected are mango, citrus, litchi and banana in fruits, cashew in plantation crops, ginger & turmeric in spices, betel vine and floriculture. District wise crops selected are given below;

      As per the guidelines of Govt. of India, Odisha Horticulture Development Society under the Chairmanship of Minister, Agriculture has been constituted for implementation of Mission Activities. One Executive Committee under Chief Secretary and one Project Management Committee under Agriculture Production Commissioner at State level, District Management Committees under Collectors have been formed for implementation of activities. For the first two years GoI provided 100% grant to the extent of Rs.8062.93 lakhs. 15% State Contribution have been provided in 2007-08(3rd year). An amount of Rs. 3812.16 lakhs have been received from Govt. of India and Rs. 659.07 lakhs from State Govt. out of which Rs. 2851.50 lakhs have been utilized up to January 2008.
