Particulars of Organization, Functions & Duties

1. Objective / purpose of Public Authority:
The objective of Sorada Irrigation Sub-Division, Aska under Executive Engineer, Bhanjanagar Irrigation Division, Bhajanagar is looking after Sorada Reservoir, Padma Anicut and Janivili Anicut of Rushikulya Irrigation System. Sorada Reservoir (3100 Ham. Live storage) was constructed during 1896 by the British rulers having catchment area of 43 Sq.Km as well as Padma Anicut across river Padma to divert Padma water to Sorada Reservoir through a leading channel as well as flood control. The system i.e Sorada Reservoir (4975 Ham. Live storage) and Padma Anicut was rehabilitated during 1999 - 2000. The Janivilli Anicut constructed during 1894 across River Rushikulya by the British rulers is still functioning properly and Rushikulya Main Canal is originating from this Anicut. Mangalpur Minor system and Gunthapada Minor system of Mahanadi Canal also under this Sub-Division under Rushikulya Irrigation System. Sukanai Haz & Debabhumi Haz are the two tanks constructed by the Britisher's, independently provides irrigation to 735.19 Ha (10 Nos.of villages) and 482.64 Ha in Khariff (5 Nos. of villages) utilising water of Mangalpur Minor. This also comes under Rushikulya Irrigation System.

2. Mission / Vision statement of the public authority:
This is a river linking system for providing Irrigation facility to 61,000 Ha. in Khariff, about 3,900 Ha ( Sugar cane & Vegetable ) in Ganjam District & Flood control as well as providing drinking water supply to Sorada NAC, Aska NAC and Berhampur Municipal Corporation. Out of the above, this Sub-Division is looking after water supply & maintenance from 00 Km to 28.90 Kms of Rushikulya Main Canal originating from Janivilli Head works with its distribution system and having ayacut area of 10,032 Ha. in Khariff and about 3,900 Ha (Sugar cane & Vegetable) and facilitating irrigation requirement of 70 Nos. of villages through 25 Nos. of Pani Panchyat Flood control in Rushikulya, Padma, Jorou, Badanadi, Baghua, Ghodahada and Nandini within this Sub-Divisional jurisdiction.

3. Brief History of the Public Authority7 & Context of its formation:
This Sub-Division was created since long. The employee strength of this Sub-division in respect of non-technical staff & technical staff are separately.

4. Duties of the Public authority:
Periodical Repair and maintenance work of the reservoir, Canal system, Canal & flood embankments, Residential & Non-residential buildings and Construction of new flood embankments as per decision of Higher authority under Sub-Divisional jurisdiction with codal procedures & rules of the Department.

5. Main Activities / Functions of the Public Authority:
Maintenance and repair of reservoir, Canal, Flood bank, Residential buildings, Non-residential buildings and roads under its jurisdiction. Timely release of water for Agriculture purpose as well as for drinking purpose. Planning, estimating and supervision of new construction of works and also keeping & maintaining records of reservoir. Maintaining Quality control test records.

6. List of service being provided by the Public Authority with a brief write up on them:
Till now this Sub-Division is providing water services to Agricultural land under command area of the Canal system by release of water in time during Khariff & Sugar cane with active participation of 25 Nos. of Panipanchyat functioning on the command area including supply of drinking water to Berhampur, Aska & Sorada. Watch & ward of Flood embankments & operation of river sluices during High flood.
