Particulars of Organization, Functions & Duties

1. Objective/ Purpose of the Public Authority:

     To manage successfully I.G.I.T., Sarang and produce best technical manpower with Diploma/ Degree level education.

2. Mission/ Vision Statement of the public authority:

     To be an academic institution of excellence striving continuously for advancement of technical education and research in service of the society.

3. Mission:

     To produce well trained technical graduates with innovative thinking, knowledge and skills to meet the requirement of the chasing society.

     To foster, promote and sustain scientific research in emerging fields of technology with a futuristic outlook. To establish interactive linkages with reading technological institutions, research centres and industries.

     To provide service to the community through continuing education and technology transfer.

     To instill in each member of the IGIT community the spirit of passion and dedication to work creatively and effectively for the betterment of humankind.

4. Brief history of the public authority and context of its formation:

     Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology (IGIT), Sarang was established in the year of 1982 and was managed directly by the Govt. of Odisha in the name of Odisha College of Engineering (OCE). Prior to this, since 1981, the institute in the name of Modern Polytechnic (MPT) was offering Diploma Courses in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Mining Survey Engineering. In the year 1987, both OCE and MPT were merged and renamed as IGIT, Sarang and the management was transferred to an Autonomous Society. Presently, the Institute is offering seven Under Graduate Engineering courses in Civil, Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, Metallurgical, Electronics & Telecommunication and Computer Science Engg., Master in Computer Application; and four Post Graduate Engg. courses in Industrial Power Control & Drives, Environmental Engg., Mechanical System Design and Structural Engineering and besides five Diploma courses in Civil, Electrical, Electronics & Telecommunication, Mechanical & Metallurgical Engineering.

     The Institute is fully residential with an integrated campus covering 179 acres of land encompassing hostels, staff quarters and a sprawling playground (Dr. M.P. Mishra Memorial stadium) with basketball, volleyball and badminton courts. In addition to this, with the Govt. approval, a proposal has been sub mitted to District authorities for further alienation of 200 acres of Govt. land in front of the Institute for its further expansion. The institute has central infrastructure facilities like Central Library (with 27,000 volumes of books and 50 current periodicals/ journals subscribed every year), Central Computer Centre, Central Workshop, Knowledge Centre, 8 nos. of student hostels having accommodation facility for 1000 students and other amenities such as SBI (Core Bank facilities) Guest House, Hospital, Post Office, Canteen, Students and Employees Cooperative Consumer Stores, different clubs, Telephone Exchange, Mobile tower and Schooling up to High School level in its campus.

5. Duties of the public authority:

Director

i) The Principal shall be the Chief Academic and Executive Officer of the Institution and shall be responsible for the proper day to day administration of the Institution and for the imparting of instructions and maintenance of discipline therein. All other staff of the Institution shall be subordinate to the Director. He shall be the custodian of the records, the funds of the Society and such other property of the Society as the Board may commit to his charge from time to time.ii) The Director at the capacity of the Secretary of the Society shall operate the Bank Account of the Society which will be maintained in any of the Nationalized Banks of the country to be decided by the Secretary according to convenience.

iii) The Director may delegate any of his powers to any of his subordinates with approval of the Board.

iv) The Director shall act as the Secretary to the Society, the Board, and such other committees of the Society or of the Board as may be constituted from time to time.

v) Subject to the Budget Provision, the Director shall be competent to incur expenditure in accordance with the procedure as may be laid down by the Board from time to time.

vi) The Director of the Institution shall be competent to take disciplinary measures against the students of the Institution which may include imposition of fines in accordance with the rules to be framed by the Board in this behalf, provided that the fines, so imposed, may be remitted wholly or in part at the discretion of the Director of the Institution.
