Particulars of Organization, Functions & Duties

1. Objective/ Purpose of the Public Authority:
a) To Standardise Weights & Measures in the districts.
b) To ensure use of standard weights & measures.
c) Establishment of Inspectorial units in the districts and to guide it for smooth functioning.
d) To redress the grievances of public and the grievance days fixed in different Inspectorial Unit Offices i.e. Berhampur Town, Berhampur Sadar, Chatrapur, Khallikote, Aska and Bhanjanagar in Ganjam District and Inspectorial Unit Office at Parlakhemundi in Gajapati District and steps are taken certainly.
2. Mission/ Vision Statement of the Public Authority:
a) To protect the consumers and general public from unscrupulous exploitation in various fields of weights and measures.
b) To ensure use of standard and stamped weights and measures for the maintenance of their accuracies and to detect violation of provision of law by the recalcitrant traders.
c) To ensure collection of government fees as due from such activities.
To achieve these objectives this organisation enforces various legal metrology laws framed to provide social justice and equality to all in various fields of weights and measures.
3. Brief History of the Public Authority and Context of its Formation:
The logo of this organization is equiposition in Weights and Measures Act. This Organization in Odisha have its own Directorate of Legal Metrology at Khandagiri, Bhubaneswar functioning under the control of Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Department, Odisha under which this establishment i.e. Office of the Assistant Controller Legal Metrology, Ganjam Zone, Berhampur is working. This zone has 7 ( Seven ) Inspectorial Units namely Berhampur Town, Berhampur Sadar, Chatrapur, Aska, Bhanjanagar, Khallikote and Parlakhemundi where individual Legal Metrology Officers are engaged in the said units.
4. Duties of the Public Authority:
a) Supervision & monitoring of Legal Metrology Week.
b) To protect the consumer rights in weights and measures Act.
c) Implemention of legislation relating to legal metrology.
5. Main Activities/ Functions of the Public Authority:
a) Enforcement
b) Circulation and Implementation of Legal Metrology Activities
c) JointRaid
d) Collection of Government fees
All the above main activities and functions are being done by the Public Authorities with a view to regulation of use of correct weighing and measuring instruments in protection of trade and commerce to ensure the exact weights, measures and numbers of any commodities is provided to a customer as contracted for, or paid for by him. It also safeguards consumer interest by ensuring mandatory declaration on the packaged commodities.
6. List of Services being provided by the Public Authority with a brief write-up on them:
Supervision and monitoring of implemention of various programmes and policy planning relating to the subjects assigned to the Directorate of Legal Metrology, Odisha on behalf of / under the control of Food, Supplies and Consumer Welfare Deptt., Odisha.

A Grievance redressal machinery is in place at Ganjam zone, Berhampur.

The Grievance handling is undertaken on every 5th, 20th, 30th at Berhampur. Besides there are arrangements for grievance redressal at field level.
