Objective / Purpose of the Public Authority:

Rengali Multipurpose Project

(a) Rengali Dam:

  River Brahmani, the second largest in the State, drains from 39,033 km2 of catchment before falling into Bay of Bengal.  Rengali Dam, across the River Brahmani with a surface power house below the dam, constitute the 1st stage of development of Rengali Multipurpose Project. The  construction of Dam was taken up during the year 1972 and was completed during the year 1985. Since then, it has been successfully controlling the flood in Brahmani delta covering an area of 2600 Sq km. The power house has an installed capacity of 250(5x50M.W) and the generation from the1st unit started from 1985. Other units were also commissioned in phased manner and all the Units started generation from the year 1992. The total expenditure on Dam & Power House was Rs.2,032 Million.

(B) Rengali Irrigation Project :

  The second stage of development constitutes, Construction of "Samal Barrage" across the river Brahmani, 35KM down stream of the Dam, to provide irrigation to 2,18,392 ha. of land (CCA) through Left & Right Canal System, by utilizing regulated release of water from Rengali Power House out which the ayacut of Left Canal System is 1,14,300 Ha & 1,04,092,Ha. in Right Canal System. The Barrage & Canal  systems are being executed as a separate Project, named as "Rengali Irrigation Project". The project will provide Irrigation in the district of Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Keonjhar & Cuttack.

Objective of the Project :

  1. To provide Irrigation both in Left & Right canal systems for an ayacut of  2,18,392 ha.
  2. Flood Control in the Deltaic region of river Brahmani
  3. Generation of Hydro power with an installed capacity of 250 M.W (5x50M.W.)
