Aims & Objective of the Organization:
The main objectives of Directorate of Economics & Statistics, Odisha, can broadly be classified as follows:-
Mission/ Vision:
The Directorate of Economics & Statistics is an apex Statistical Organization of the State, functioning under the administrative control of planning & Co-ordination Department, Govt. of Odisha since 1961. It is engaged in various statistical studies and surveys inside the State. It has a three tier decentralized structure i.e., the Directorate headed by the Director in the State Capital Bhubaneswar, 3 Range Offices headed by Deputy Directors in Revenue Divisions and 27 District Statistical Offices headed by District Statistical Officers in Revenue Districts which are responsible for collection, processing and publication of data on diverse socio-economic activities of the State. While DES is responsible for collecting the required data directly through its own functionaries, substantial statistical information is mobilized with the help of other line departments.
Besides, there is a training institute namely Regional Institute of Planning, Applied Economics and Statistics (RIPAE & S), which imparts in service training to the statistical personnel working in different departments of Government and public undertakings.
The headquarters of the Directorate is equipped with advance computer systems and a big library which abounds in various useful books on Statistics, Economics, Mathematics, Planning, Computers etc. and varieties of research journals and periodicals.
Brief History & Background for its Establishment: The State Statistical Bureau of Odisha popularly known as Bureau of Statistics and Economics is now functioning as a Principal Statistical Organization of the State. It was a small cell under the erstwhile Planning & Reconstruction Deptt., during 1949. It was re-designated as cabinet Department in 1950. During 1956 this cell was transferred to Finance Department. In 1958, this Statistical cell was declared as Heads of Department (HOD) under the Administrative control of Planning and Co-ordination Department. In 1987 it was renamed as Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES). The Directorate has 3 Range Offices and 27 Districts Statistical Offices. DES Odisha has been declared as Nodal Agency for all Statistical activities of the State.
